Under Rome there are hundreds of miles of tunnel, and the early church is buried in them. Greene goes down into the catacombs in the 1850s: the galleries, the inscriptions scratched by hand, the chapels, the martyrs, and the persistence of a faith practised underground while the city overhead was hunting it.
