Theodore and Mabel Bent worked the Hadhramaut and the coast of southern Arabia in the 1890s, into country almost no European had entered: the ruins, the sultans, the tribes, the archaeology, the fevers, and the exhausting business of getting permission from people with no reason to grant it. Theodore died of it. Mabel finished the book.
