Bankrupt at fifty six, he moved the family to Europe and paid for it by writing about Europe. These letters are Twain taking the cure at Aix les Bains, suffering nobly through Wagner at Bayreuth, drifting down the Rhone in a boat with no engine, and watching the continent from the cheap seats in Berlin.
