Fanny Loviot, a Frenchwoman travelling alone, was captured off the Chinese coast in the 1850s and held aboard a pirate junk, and her account of the capture, the captivity and the escape is as gripping now as it was scandalous then. An extraordinary story, and she was there for every hour of it.
