The railway ran a certain distance and then simply stopped, and the rest was river and foot. Carpenter goes up the Nile from Cairo through the Sudan and on to Kisumu on the lake, reporting the cotton, the cataracts, the officials and the caravans of an Africa being surveyed and administered by men who mostly disliked one another.
